A day in the life of a Researcher – Mental Health First Aid Champion

On Monday this week, I attended a Mental health First Aid training course, run by St John Ambulance. It was facinating but also, some of the statistics that were presented were really shocking and very sobering. On their one day course, in the morning, we looked at mental health and stress in the workplace, the range of mental health conditions and we identified useful early warning signs of mental ill health. By the afternoon, we developed Mental Health First Aid Plans. I learned a great deal and I still have to find the time to digest my manual and apply it to our workplace at KGS ltd.

I was delighted when the Board supported my request to attend this course and it shows their commitment towards the mental wellbeing of our staff, as well as their physical health. Having attended thsi course, I am not a Mental Health First Aid Champion and I plan to raise awareness by discussing mental health issues at our weekly Team meetings, to give it some focus. I am hopeful that by signpostng and armed with lots of new resources, I can assist my fellow colleagues, who may, from time to time, feel stressed, anxious or depressed.
